Phillies Split Series With Brewers

After Cole Hamels got the loss for the first game, Pat Burrell carried the team to a victory today, giving the Phils a series split.

Wednesday night’s game got away from Hamels, when he gave up a pair of dingers to Prince Fielder. Some are questioning Charlie Manuel’s use of Hamels with a relatively high pitch count going into the 8th inning, although I’m not necessarily one of them. He was letting his ace keep his lead, which I really can’t argue with knowing how brilliantly Kid Cole usually performs.

Today’s game was a good pitching duel featuring Moyer on the hill for the Phillies. He pitched very solid ball, but today’s pitching story is how Tom Gordon bailed Moyer out of a 7th inning jam. Flash came in with men on 1st and 3rd with no outs, but somehow managed to get out of the tight situation.

Clearly, the other hero of the game was Pat Burrell, whose 8th inning 2-run double gave the Phillies the lead for good. Burrell has possibly been the team’s MVP so far this season, with the other consideration being Utley, and really came up clutch today. The two RBI’s he got today gives him 25 for the season, which is the record for any Philly in the month of April.

No one can really be upset with how the team has started, especially considering the absence of Jimmy Rollins. At 12 wins and 11 losses, the Phillies have a winning April so far, something they have not enjoyed in quite a while. Let’s just hope that Rollins gets back soon, and Howard can stop striking out every AB. If that happens, we could be in for a quite a ride for the summer.

  1. I have been very happy with their pitching so far and I think just about everyone feels the same way.
A big key is Howard getting on track. It is only a matter of time before that happens.

I think he is thinking way to much at the plate and that will mess you up every time. He is swinging at bad pitches then taking a strike right down the middle.

Uncle Charlie’s strong point, supposedly, is batting. So hopefully he will get Howard right is his head again and then look out National League East!

I know it’s impossible for Utley and Burrell to keep up their pace, but if they have good years and the pitches stays solid we WILL have a championship this year!!!!!!

And by the way how about Tom Gorden coming big time! Yea baby!
